Design Challenge

To encourage younger citizens to attend the first meeting with their social worker and to facilitate the communication between them during the meeting.

The Problem

Jobcenter Kolding faced a challenge: younger citizens were increasingly not showing up to their scheduled meetings with social workers. Especially the first meeting with a social worker is particularly important for processing citizens’ cases. Much of this meeting is concerned with understanding the citizens’ current situation and discussing a plan either for future employment or further education. However, many young people have pre-conceived ideas of the Jobcenter from negative stories they’ve heard from others. Combined with their vulnerable situation, this negative perception is another reported reason why they avoid the first encounter. Our design team was challenged to think about simple and inexpensive ideas to help facilitate this first vulnerable encounter.
